Maldives Tourism Declined MATATO Seeks Collaborative Efforts

The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators ( MATATO ) has engaged with the Indian High Commission in the Maldives to address the decline in Indian tourist arrivals . The association is strategizing to revive Indian tourism through joint promotional activities and initiatives. Plans include comprehensive roadshows across major Indian cities and influencer/media trips to the Maldives.

Indian tourists, previously a significant source of visitors to the Maldives, experienced a decline after certain political remarks surfaced in January. This downturn led to Indians dropping from the top to the fifth position in tourist visits within weeks. In 2023, Indians constituted the largest group of tourists (2,09,198) to the Maldives, followed by Russians and Chinese.

MATATO emphasized India’s critical role in Maldives Tourism, highlighting the potential of India’s burgeoning middle class expected to spend substantially on international travel by 2030. Outbound Indian travelers are projected to increase significantly, positioning India as a key outbound travel market globally by 2030.

The association foresees robust growth in Indian outbound tourism, attracting attention from global players in hospitality, airlines, and tourism sectors. Dubai, for instance, recently introduced a five-year multiple-entry visa for Indians to bolster travel and economic collaborations.

MATATO remains optimistic about regaining Indian tourist numbers with industry and government support. Collaborations with Indian travel associations and stakeholders are key to promoting the Maldives as a premier travel destination. The association’s efforts align with forecasts of Indian outbound travel growth, reflecting a broader trend in global tourism.
