In a recent statement on Telegram, the ISIS group claimed responsibility for the attack at Moscow’s Crocus Hall, asserting that four armed men orchestrated the assault. However, Russia has contested these claims, casting doubt on the involvement of ISIS-K in one of its deadliest terror incidents in decades.
The assault, which occurred during a concert by the Soviet-era rock group Picnic, resulted in nearly 140 fatalities and left 182 individuals injured. Despite ISIS’s assertion of responsibility, Russian President Vladimir Putin hinted at potential Ukrainian involvement in the massacre, suggesting that the perpetrators attempted to evade capture by fleeing towards Ukraine.
The Russian leader’s insinuation of Ukrainian complicity stems from geopolitical tensions, particularly Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This invasion escalated a long-standing conflict between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian factions, sparking a major European war.
Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia’s foreign ministry, criticized the United States for invoking the ISIS-K narrative, accusing Washington of diverting attention from its support for factions in Kyiv. Zakharova’s remarks underscored Russia’s skepticism towards US intelligence, challenging the veracity of the ISIS-K claim.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov echoed Zakharova’s sentiments, refraining from commenting on the Islamic State’s assertion while emphasizing the ongoing nature of the investigation. Peskov also declined to address US intelligence regarding the incident, citing sensitivity surrounding the information.
As investigations into the Moscow attack continue, Russia’s stance highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics at play, with implications for international relations and counterterrorism efforts.
By questioning the ISIS-K narrative and hinting at potential Ukrainian involvement, Russia underscores the need for a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth behind the tragic events at Crocus Hall.
