In a concerning development, eleven Chinese naval vessels have been detected around Taiwan, heightening tensions between the island and China amidst a dispute over a fatal fishing boat incident. The incident, which occurred near Taiwan’s Kinmen islands, has exacerbated existing friction between the two entities.
The fishing boat incident transpired on February 14 when a Chinese speedboat capsized near Taiwan’s Kinmen islands while being pursued by the Taiwanese coast guard. Two crew members lost their lives in the tragic event, while two others were rescued and detained temporarily in Kinmen.
Tensions were already simmering between China and Taiwan, with Beijing claiming sovereignty over the self-ruled island. The fatal incident has further strained relations, with conflicting accounts emerging regarding the circumstances leading to the capsizing of the speedboat.
Amidst the ongoing dispute, Taiwan’s defence ministry reported a significant escalation in Chinese military activity. In the 24-hour period leading up to Wednesday, China dispatched fifteen warplanes, eleven naval vessels, and one balloon into the waters and skies surrounding Taiwan. Subsequently, at least fifteen more Chinese warplanes were detected in the vicinity.
The heightened presence of Chinese naval ships, surpassing the usual numbers observed, underscores the severity of the situation. This surge in military activity marks the most significant deployment of Chinese naval vessels around Taiwan so far this year.
The incident has evoked memories of previous escalations, such as the detection of eleven Chinese naval vessels in December, coinciding with Taiwan’s presidential elections. Beijing has accused Taiwanese authorities of evading responsibility and concealing the truth regarding the fishing boat incident, exacerbating tensions further.
As the dispute persists, Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council has reported further Chinese maritime intrusions around Kinmen. Despite conflicting narratives, both sides remain entrenched in their positions, heightening concerns about the potential for further escalation in the region.
